Ethel M Botanical Cactus Garden

Nevada's largest cactus garden — three free acres with more than 300 species of cacti, succulents, and desert plants — wrapped around the Ethel M chocolate factory, where windows let you watch chocolatiers at work before browsing the flagship shop.

Tip: Both the garden and the self-guided factory view are free, open daily 9am–7pm. Visit in the cooler morning, or in December when the garden is strung with over a million holiday lights. Free chocolate samples are usually on offer inside.

Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve

A free 140-acre preserve of nine ponds and five miles of trails on the Pacific Flyway, home to more than 270 bird species — ducks, herons, avocets, roadrunners, and seasonal migrants — plus a March Monarch butterfly garden and a resident tortoise named Tino.

Lion Habitat Ranch

Quirky Landmarks
A nonprofit big-cat sanctuary that once supplied the lions for MGM's Strip habitat — now home to rescued lions you can see up close, plus a chatty painting ostrich, parrots, and tortoises. Keeper-led feedings and behind-the-scenes encounters round it out.

A 100-acre park built around a 31-acre lake on a former quarry, with paved walking and biking paths circling the water, big open lawns, an exercise course, pavilions, public art, and plenty of ducks and geese. One of Henderson's best free strolls.

Tip: Free and open 6am to midnight. The paved loop around the lake is flat and stroller-friendly. Early morning and dusk are coolest and best for birdlife; no swimming or fishing in the lake. Shaded pavilions make a good picnic base.

An open-air shopping and dining village in the Green Valley Ranch area, with tree-lined sidewalks, fountains, more than 20 restaurants and cafes, and a mix of national and local shops. Pleasant free window-shopping and people-watching, Nevada tax-free.

Tip: Strolling, fountain-watching, and live seasonal events cost nothing. Grab a coffee or an affordable bite and walk the village — Nevada has no sales tax on most goods. Free parking throughout. Evenings are liveliest and coolest.
