Three blocks of 1880s-1890s ironfront commercial buildings along the harbor — once 'the Wall Street of the South,' now a walkable National Historic Landmark District packed with antique shops, restaurants, galleries, and the Pier 21 area. Free to walk anytime; many businesses free to browse.

Seawall Boulevard & Galveston Beaches
Free beach access / $12 vehicle parking at Stewart Beach (May-Sept)

The 10.3-mile Seawall — the longest continuous urban sidewalk in the country — runs above the Gulf with free beach access at every cross street. Stewart Beach, East Beach, and Pocket Park beaches all free or low fee. Sunrise on the Seawall is a Galveston ritual.

Galveston Island State Park

Beaches
2,000 acres on the quieter west end of the island, with 1.6 miles of beachfront, salt-marsh kayak trails, bird-watching boardwalks across the estuary, and primitive camping. Quieter than Stewart Beach but still classic Gulf-Coast scenery. Day use $5.

Tip: Beach side and bay side are accessed separately — both are part of the same park. Best birding in spring and fall migrations.

1892 Bishop's Palace

Nicholas Clayton's 1892 Romanesque Revival mansion in the East End Historic District — 14 fireplaces, 40 rooms, hand-carved stairwells, and the only Galveston building to fully withstand the 1900 hurricane. A National Historic Landmark and one of the most architecturally significant Victorian houses in America.

The Bryan Museum

The largest collection of Texas and American West historical artifacts under one roof — 70,000+ items including Comanche war shirts, Spanish conquistador armor, a Texas Revolution rifle collection, Western art, and rare books — housed in the 1895 Galveston Orphan's Home building.

Pier 22's Galveston Historic Seaport — the Texas Seaport Museum's Ship to Shore immigration galleries, plus the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa, a square-rigged iron barque, one of only three of her kind still actively sailing. Single ticket covers both.

Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum

A retired 1969 jack-up drilling rig converted into a three-level museum at Pier 19 — drill floor, mud room, crew quarters, and a working scale model of the offshore drilling process. The only museum of its kind in the world, run by the Energy Education Foundation.

Galveston Railroad Museum

1932 Santa Fe railroad terminal turned working railroad museum — vintage rail cars (Pullman porters, dining cars, cabooses), an HO-scale model railroad, twin-screw steam engine demonstrations, weekend train rides, and a Harvey House dining car you can dine in.

40-block National Historic Landmark District east of Broadway with 1860s-1900s Greek Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne houses — including Bishop's Palace. Walking the residential streets is free; some private homes occasionally open for the spring Historic Homes Tour.

Galveston Naval Museum (USS Cavalla & USS Stewart)

Across the harbor at Seawolf Park on Pelican Island — the USS Cavalla, a WWII Gato-class submarine credited with sinking a Japanese carrier at Saipan, and the USS Stewart, a destroyer escort. Self-guided tours through torpedo rooms, control room, and engine room.

Moody Mansion

1893 four-story limestone mansion built for cotton merchant W.L. Moody Jr. — 28,000 square feet, 20 rooms, hand-carved oak woodwork, and an audio tour narrated by family voices via QR codes throughout. The Moodys lived here continuously from 1895 until 1986.
