Free 30-minute guided tours of the rotunda, governor's reception room, Senate and House chambers, and Supreme Court chamber run Monday-Friday 8:30am-4pm and weekends at 9am, 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. Reservations recommended for groups.

A 229-acre Dauphin County nature sanctuary with a 90-acre shallow lake, 6 miles of free trails, and 1.5 miles of boardwalks through the wetland. The Benjamin Olewine III Nature Center anchors the park with interpretive exhibits on the Susquehanna Valley. Open dawn to dusk daily; no admission fee.

Capital Area Greenbelt

A 20.9-mile free loop trail circling Pennsylvania's capital city, originally conceived by landscape architect Warren Manning (a disciple of Frederick Law Olmsted). The Greenbelt passes through Riverfront Park along the Susquehanna, the Reservoir Park, Wildwood Park, and the city's residential and downtown neighborhoods.

Tip: The riverfront section near Riverfront Park and City Island is the easiest, most scenic stretch. Mix of paved, gravel, and crushed-stone surfaces. The Capital Area Greenbelt Association (CAGA) has free maps online.

Broad Street Market

Opened in 1860, Broad Street Market is the oldest continuously-operating market house in the United States — listed on the National Register since 1974. Forty-some vendors sell Pennsylvania Dutch baked goods, fresh produce, meats, prepared meals, and crafts in a historic stone building and adjacent tent. Free to walk through.

A 63-acre Susquehanna River island connected to downtown Harrisburg by the Walnut Street Bridge, home to Harrisburg Senators minor-league baseball, Water Golf miniature golf, an antique carousel, the City Island Railroad mini-train, and the Harbourtown playground. A 38-acre park along the Susquehanna River 6 miles north of downtown, anchored by an 1814 Federal-style mansion built on the site of a 1755 French and Indian War fort. The grounds (free, open 8am-dusk daily) include a covered bridge, blacksmith shop, stone barn, and tavern museum; the mansion runs guided tours May through December.

Harrisburg's downtown, midtown, and riverfront areas string together 40+ commissioned murals, galleries, theaters, public art, and historical monuments along a walkable arts district. Sprocket Mural Works is the nonprofit behind many of the murals — their Walk of Art route connects the highlights into a single morning loop.

Pennsylvania National Fire Museum

Housed in the restored 1899 Reily Hose Co. No. 10 Victorian firehouse, this museum preserves Pennsylvania's firefighting history with antique pumpers, horse-drawn engines, alarm systems, gear, and photographs. Established 1971 by retired firefighters; kid-friendly with hands-on bell-ringing and pole-sliding exhibits.

National Civil War Museum at Reservoir Park
