Museums

Housed in a domed former downtown post office, this museum tells the story of the American carousel — hand-carved horses and menagerie figures, a working restoration shop where volunteers carve and paint, and the history of Sandusky's own carousel-building past. The 1830s Greek Revival mansion of Sandusky merchant Oran Follett is now the city's free local-history museum, run by the Sandusky Library. Period rooms and rotating exhibits cover Sandusky's Underground Railroad role and the nearby Johnson's Island Confederate prisoner-of-war camp, and the cupola offers a view over the bay.

On the north shore of Kelleys Island lies the largest easily accessible set of glacial grooves in the world — a limestone channel 400 feet long, 35 feet wide and up to 15 feet deep, scoured by ice sheets moving down from Canada roughly 18,000 years ago and exposed by 19th-century quarrying. A free walkway and interpretive signs ring the grooves.

Tip: The grooves themselves are free; the cost is getting to Kelleys Island by ferry from Marblehead or Sandusky (round-trip fares apply, more if you bring a car — many visitors go on foot or by bike). Combine with the island's beaches and the short Crusher Trail.

Historic Sites

A 352-foot Doric column on South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay) commemorates Oliver Hazard Perry's 1813 Lake Erie victory in the War of 1812 and the long peace between the U.S., Britain and Canada that followed. Run by the National Park Service, the grounds are free, and an elevator rides to an observation deck with island-and-lake views.
