Climb 199 steps to the top of this 1859 lighthouse for sweeping panoramic views of the Cape May peninsula, the Delaware Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. Inside the keeper's quarters at the base is a small free museum on the lighthouse's history. One of the best lighthouse climbs on the East Coast and a steal for under $15.

A 244-acre state park at the very tip of New Jersey, completely free to visit. Walk three different nature trails through coastal forest and freshwater ponds, climb the elevated platform at the WWII bunker on the beach, watch for migrating raptors and butterflies, and enjoy front-row views of the Cape May Lighthouse. A free naturalist visitor center has hands-on exhibits.

A free public beach famous for two things: hunting for Cape May 'diamonds' (translucent quartz pebbles polished smooth by the waves) and watching the sunken concrete ship SS Atlantus rusting offshore. Every evening from spring through fall a moving flag-lowering ceremony honors a fallen veteran. Pure free Americana on the Delaware Bay.

Tip: Bring a small bag for collecting Cape May diamonds β the best hunting is at low tide. The flag ceremony happens daily at sunset Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting.

A three-block pedestrian-only outdoor shopping street in the heart of Cape May's Victorian historic district. Restored 1800s storefronts line brick walkways with benches, fountains, and gas lamps. Window shopping, people watching, and live street performers are all completely free. The architecture alone β one of the densest concentrations of preserved Victorian buildings in the country β justifies the visit.
