Walk three different nature trails through coastal forest and freshwater ponds, climb the elevated platform at the WWII bunker on the beach, watch for migrating raptors and butterflies, and enjoy front-row views of the Cape May Lighthouse. A free naturalist visitor center has hands-on exhibits.

A free public beach famous for two things: hunting for Cape May 'diamonds' (translucent quartz pebbles polished smooth by the waves) and watching the sunken concrete ship SS Atlantus rusting offshore. Every evening from spring through fall a moving flag-lowering ceremony honors a fallen veteran. Pure free Americana on the Delaware Bay.

A three-block pedestrian-only outdoor shopping street in the heart of Cape May's Victorian historic district. Restored 1800s storefronts line brick walkways with benches, fountains, and gas lamps. Window shopping, people watching, and live street performers are all completely free. The architecture alone — one of the densest concentrations of preserved Victorian buildings in the country — justifies the visit.

An 1879 Victorian mansion designed by celebrated architect Frank Furness, restored as Cape May's only Victorian house museum. Guided 45-minute tours show you what daily life looked like in Cape May's Gilded Age — fully furnished period rooms, original wallpapers and woodwork, and the medical office of Dr. Emlen Physick himself. The four-acre grounds are free to walk; only the house tour costs anything.

World War II Lookout Tower

The last freestanding World War II lookout tower in New Jersey — built in just weeks in 1942 to spot German ships off the coast and direct artillery fire from coastal batteries. Six floors of climbable concrete tower with exhibits on Cape May's wartime role, a Wall of Honor with 160+ veteran photos, and a top-floor spotting gallery where docents (sometimes WWII veterans themselves) explain the equipment and history.

Free year-round and famously one of the best fall hawk migration spots in North America — millions of birds funnel through the Cape May peninsula each fall.

New Jersey Audubon's free birding center in Cape May Point, with self-guided trails, viewing platforms, expert staff, and one of the best optics shops on the East Coast (binoculars and scopes available to handle and try). One of the most consistently birded spots in the world during fall migration. Modestly priced bird walks run almost daily.

Cape May's two-mile paved oceanfront promenade running parallel to Beach Avenue from Cape May Convention Hall to Cove Beach. Free pedestrian access any time of day or night, well-lit, with public restrooms about every half mile. The covered Sunset Pavilion at the southern end frames one of the Jersey Shore's best views back toward the Cape May Lighthouse.

Cape May's main downtown swimming beach — wide sandy beach with lifeguards, gently sloping into the Atlantic, with the Promenade running along the back edge. Walking on the beach off-season and on the Promenade year-round is always free. Beach tags are required for daytime swimming/sunbathing in summer but daily tags are still cheap by Jersey Shore standards.

A free-admission 200-acre county park about 25 minutes north of Cape May with one of the most surprising free zoos in the country — over 550 animals across 250 species, including lions, cheetahs, giraffes, snow leopards, and red pandas. Plus a free disc golf course, walking trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds. Easily a half-day for families and one of the best free attractions in the region.

Sunset Beach Veterans Flag Ceremony

A free, deeply moving daily ritual at Sunset Beach: every evening at sunset (Memorial Day weekend through August), the American flag is lowered to taps, accompanied by a recorded Kate Smith rendition of 'God Bless America.' Each flag flown is one that draped the casket of a deceased veteran — over 6,000 veterans honored to date. Plan to arrive 30 minutes before sunset to claim a spot on the bay-facing beach.

Free 47-concert summer series at the Rotary Park Bandstand in the heart of downtown Cape May — jazz, acoustic, tribute bands, and full ensembles every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday evening from June through Labor Day. The bandstand sits on the corner of Lafayette and Jackson, a block from the Washington Street Mall and a short walk to the beach.

Tip: All concerts start at 7pm. Bring a beach chair or blanket — fixed seating is limited and the lawn fills early on weekends. The Rotary Park location is steps from Washington Street Mall, so plan dinner there before.
