A mile-long oceanfront boardwalk that's become one of the Jersey Shore's most beloved free attractions. Walk past restored 1920s arcades, public art installations, the iconic Convention Hall and Carousel House, beachfront bars, and live street musicians on weekends. From Memorial Day through Labor Day a beach badge is required to set foot on the sand, but the boardwalk itself is free year-round and at its best off-season when crowds are gone.

Convention Hall & Paramount Theatre

A stunning 1929 Beaux-Arts complex right on the boardwalk that's free to walk through and admire. The Grand Arcade connects Convention Hall to the Paramount Theatre — a soaring barrel-vaulted hall with shops, art, and pop-up events you can wander through any day. The exterior architecture alone is worth the visit, and free events and craft fairs happen inside throughout the year.

A pretty freshwater lake separating Asbury Park from neighboring Ocean Grove, ringed by a free walking path with footbridges and gazebos. A peaceful counterpoint to the boardwalk just two blocks east, with swans, ducks, and benches perfect for a picnic. Pedal swan boats are available for a small fee, but the lakeside walk is completely free.

A working museum of pinball and arcade history right on the boardwalk, with hundreds of restored machines from the 1930s through today — all set to free play with admission. The $20 half day pass gets you up to six hours of unlimited play, and non-players can hang out and watch for just $5. A genuine slice of Americana and one of the best rainy-day activities on the Jersey Shore.

The legendary Asbury Park rock club where Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, and Steve Van Zandt cut their teeth in the mid-1970s. Even without a ticket, the painted exterior, neon sign, and outdoor Summer Stage area on Ocean Avenue are an essential Springsteen-pilgrimage photo stop and a free piece of music history.

Stephen Crane House & Museum

History
The boyhood home of Stephen Crane — author of The Red Badge of Courage — is the only surviving residence connected to the writer anywhere, an 1878 cottage on the National Register four blocks from the boardwalk. Now a free museum and intimate venue for readings, plays, and classic films.
