Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site
Free (donations suggested)
Historic Sites
When Grant came back to Galena as a Civil War hero in 1865, a group of local Republicans bought him this 1860 Italianate brick house as a thank-you. Restored to its 1868 appearance and run by the State of Illinois, the house keeps Grant's furniture, personal effects, and family rooms in period. Costumed interpreters lead the free tour from April through October.
Address: 500 Bouthillier St, Galena, IL 61036
Tip: Open Wednesday through Sunday 9 a.m.–4:45 p.m. year-round, closed Mondays and Tuesdays and several major holidays. Tours are guided, not self-paced — come within 30 minutes of opening on summer weekends to avoid a wait. The neighborhood up to the house has steep hills.
