Trails & Biking

More than 45 miles of paved rail-trail lacing Bloomington and Normal together along the old Illinois Central Gulf corridor — a White House-designated Millennium Trail with 32 trailheads, Route 66 branch segments, and connections to parks, Uptown Normal, and the David Davis Mansion.

Tip: The Illinois Central (north–south) spine is the classic ride; the Route 66 branch adds roadside-America flavor. Arrive by Amtrak and you can walk the trail from Uptown Station. Portions are plowed in winter.

Historic Sites

The 1872 Italianate-Second Empire estate of Supreme Court Justice David Davis — Lincoln's campaign manager and one of his closest allies. Hourly guided tours cover three floors of original Victorian furnishings, the barn, and Sarah's flower garden, all on a pay-what-you-can suggested donation.

A nationally accredited county museum inside the magnificent 1903 domed courthouse on Bloomington's square — Lincoln-law-circuit history, Route 66 stories, and immersive galleries — where students and children are always free and everyone enters free on Tuesdays.

Gardens

A 1929 Channel-Norman mansion on a wooded Bloomington hilltop, surrounded by the free six-acre Genevieve Green Gardens — Jens Jensen-inspired woodland paths, a formal plaza, and a Japanese garden. Summer brings the Illinois Shakespeare Festival to the grounds' open-air theatre.
