The heart of Alabama's coast is its sugar-white public beach, free to enjoy along the Gulf of Mexico. The main public beach at Gulf Place has restrooms, a pavilion, and the iconic beachball water tower, with a dozen more free public access points up and down the shore.

An award-winning 28-plus-mile network of paved, ADA-accessible trails winding through six distinct ecosystems inside Gulf State Park — from maritime forest to coastal marsh. Repeatedly named one of the country's best recreational trails, it's free for hikers, cyclists, and birders.

Stretching 1,540 feet into the Gulf, this is the largest pier on the Gulf of Mexico. Walk out for sweeping water views, sunsets, and dolphin sightings, or drop a line — no fishing license needed off the pier. An education pavilion explains the coastal ecosystem.

Fort Morgan Historic Site

Guarding the mouth of Mobile Bay since 1834, this star-shaped masonry fort saw the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay ("Damn the torpedoes!"). Self-guided tours cover the ramparts, later concrete batteries, and a museum tracing military history from 1814 to 1945.

On a four-acre campus overlooking Wolf Bay, this free city arts center features a two-story, 10,000-square-foot gallery of Gulf Coast artists, plus a hot-glass studio and a clay studio you can watch in action. The gift shop sells original local work.
