New Hanover County Arboretum

Airlie Gardens

A magnificent 67-acre historic garden on Bradley Creek featuring sweeping lawns, sculpture installations, lake views, and the famous 467-year-old Airlie Oak — one of the oldest living trees on the East Coast. The seasonal Bottle Chapel, built entirely from recycled bottles, is one of the most unusual outdoor art installations in the South.

Tip: New Hanover County residents and military pay $5 every day with ID — the old free-first-Sunday program no longer appears on the gardens' site. Tip: Free customer parking with validation — get your ticket stamped at any of the shops or restaurants. The complex was the first downtown adaptive-reuse project in North Carolina (1975), so the historic interpretation is part of the experience even if you don't shop. Wilmington's longest-running farmers' market — operating downtown on Dock Street since 2003. Saturday-morning vendors include North Carolina farmers, seafood from the coast, mushroom growers, bakers, jam-makers, beekeepers, plant nurseries, and a strong showing of artists and crafters. Pedestrian-only during market hours, so the whole block becomes a walking event.

Thalian Hall Historic Theater Tour

One of the oldest continuously operating theaters in America — built 1858, hosting touring acts ever since. The 45-60 minute behind-the-scenes tour walks the old lobby, balcony, stage, and dressing rooms while the docent shares stories about Maurice Barrymore, Lillian Russell, Buffalo Bill Cody, and John Phillip Sousa, all of whom performed here. Three tour types: standard History, Haunted (ages 13+), and African American Experience.

Tip: Tours are by reservation only — call the Box Office at 910-632-2285 to book a date. Tour duration is 45-60 minutes. The Haunted Tour is recommended for ages 13+ and is more popular in October. If you want to skip the tour, the lobby and exterior of this 1858 landmark are still worth a walk-by — it's two blocks from the Riverwalk.
