Eight stories above Union Pacific's Bailey Yard — the largest railroad classification yard on earth, 8.5 miles long and sorting more than 10,000 cars a day. The 7th- and 8th-floor observation decks are the only public view of the operation, and staff are on hand to explain what's rolling below.

History & Museums

The world's only Challenger 3900-series steam locomotive on public display sits here, and you can climb up for the engineer's view before walking through a mail car and caboose packed with railroad memorabilia. Diesel Unit 6922 and the relocated Hershey depot fill out the free trackside collection.

Parks & Nature

North Platte's big north-side park carries a small wildlife sanctuary, a bandstand, playgrounds, disc golf, horseshoe pits, an outdoor pool and a carousel with kiddie carnival rides. The grounds are free; only the rides and pool charge.

Quirky Landmarks

A 1963 roadside stockade you can walk into for nothing. The draw is Buffalo Bill's Miniature Wild West Show — thousands of hand-carved figures, one of the largest single folk-art displays in the country — plus an Old West museum of 1800s cowboy gear and a back stockade with a jail, wagons and a Muffler Man.

Bronze statues of the five service branches stand alongside one honoring the North Platte Canteen volunteers. A 15-foot brick bas-relief mural runs through the century's five major conflicts, and the Walk of Honor is paved with thousands of bricks naming individual veterans.

A free self-guided route through the town General Grenville Dodge platted in 1866, when North Platte was a “Hell on Wheels” end-of-track camp of 3,000 people living in tents and shacks. The stops thread the railroad legacy, the early settlers and the Canteen District.

A volunteer-built network of paved and unpaved trails around town. Whitaker's Way follows the NPPD canal 2.9 miles out to Lake Maloney, the paved Lake Maloney Trail runs 2.9 miles along the west shore, and the five-mile Buffalo Bill Trail is the local walking and running favorite.

A national cemetery on the grounds of the frontier fort where Buffalo Bill Cody scouted for the Army in the 1860s. Soldiers of the Indian Wars lie in white marble rows alongside veterans of every conflict since, on open prairie southeast of North Platte.

A family fun park on Halligan Drive with two go-kart tracks, bumper boats, water slides, an arcade and the Crystal Cave and Falls mini golf course — a homegrown run of caves and waterfalls three decades in the building.

Movies at the Fox are $5 at the door — 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays — on the big screen of a historic downtown house. The rest of the calendar belongs to the volunteer community playhouse, which stages musicals and plays in the same room.

Wildlife & Nature

More than 600,000 sandhill cranes spend roughly six weeks in the North Platte River valley each spring, roosting on the river overnight. Two public viewing blinds — the North River Wildlife Area blind and the North Platte City blind — are free and first come, first served.
