Stillwater Historic Lift Bridge
Free
Iconic Landmarks
1931 vertical-lift bridge over the St. Croix River — for 86 years the only road crossing between Stillwater and Wisconsin, retired from car traffic in 2017 when the new highway bridge opened, and reopened June 2020 as a free pedestrian-and-bicycle crossing after a three-year restoration. Six steel Parker through truss spans plus the lifting center span; takes about 5 minutes to walk across.
Address: Chestnut St E at the St. Croix River, Stillwater, MN 55082
Tip: The lift span still raises for boat traffic on a published schedule (search 'Stillwater Lift Bridge Schedule'); a bridge lift in progress is the photo moment. Bridge is steep — strollers and mobility devices may struggle. Open year-round dawn to dusk. Pair with the St. Croix Crossing Loop Trail to walk a full circuit back over the new highway bridge.

Historic Main Street Downtown Stillwater
Free
Historic Districts
Stillwater's Main Street riverfront historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places — over 100 locally owned shops and restaurants in restored 19th-century brick storefronts along the St. Croix River bluff. Antique row, art galleries, bookstores, ice cream parlors, and the Stillwater Heritage Preservation murals scattered through Union Art Alley. Five sets of historic stairways (built as early as 1871) connect downtown to the bluff-top neighborhoods.
Address: Main St between Chestnut St and Myrtle St, Stillwater, MN 55082
Tip: Saturdays are the busiest; weekday mornings are quietest. Antique shopping is heaviest on the south end of Main; food and ice cream cluster mid-Main near the gazebo. The Chestnut Street Stairs and Main Street Stairs are the most-climbed of the five historic stairway sets. Free parking lots north and south of downtown.
