Parks & Nature

Repeatedly named one of America's most beautiful places, this 35-mile stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline is famous for its towering sand dunes — including the calf-burning Dune Climb — plus the 7.4-mile Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive with overlooks 450 feet above the water, empty beaches, and inland lakes and forests. About 25 miles west of Traverse City.

On the Northwestern Michigan College campus, the Dennos holds one of the largest public collections of Inuit art in the country, alongside galleries of sculpture, glass, and rotating exhibitions plus a hands-on Discovery Gallery for kids. Recently rebranded The Curiosity Place, this hands-on children's museum on West Grand Traverse Bay is built around Great Lakes themes — a water table with locks and boats, a pretend schooner, music, and building zones for little ones to climb through and explore.
