A free 10-acre riverfront park at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, where the Lewis and Clark expedition camped for three days in 1804. A boardwalk, an open-air education pavilion with interpretive signs, and the Confluence of Nations amphitheater frame what locals call the best downtown skyline view in the metro.

A free hilltop World War I monument modeled on the Arc de Triomphe, dedicated in 1923 and listed on the National Register. From Mount Marty it overlooks the city, connects to roughly four miles of Rozark wooded nature trails, and is floodlit at night above the Southwest Boulevard valley.

Grinter Place State Historic Site

The oldest home in Wyandotte County, an 1857 farmhouse built by Moses Grinter and his Lenape wife Annie above the Delaware Crossing ferry on the Kansas River. Free guided and self-guided tours walk a restored frontier home that traded with the Delaware tribe and travelers on the Military Road.

Quindaro Ruins & Overlook

The free, hauntingly preserved ruins of Quindaro — an 1856 port town founded by abolitionists, Free-Staters, and the Wyandot tribe as a stop on the Underground Railroad. A stone overlook surveys the visible foundations, with a 1911 John Brown statue and an interpretive museum across the street.

Tip: The overlook and ruins are free and open; the across-the-street museum keeps limited hours, so check ahead. One of the most significant Underground Railroad sites in the Plains — allow time to read the interpretive panels.

A free 1,500-acre WPA-built park wrapped around a 400-acre lake — more than eight miles of hiking and bridle trails, fishing coves, a marina, playgrounds, and stone shelters designed by the National Park Service in the 1930s. The metro's biggest free nature escape.

Tip: Park entry is free; only boat rental and some shelters cost. The Schlagle environmental library sits on the west side. The full perimeter trail is a serious hike — pick a trailhead and loop.

The free county history museum in Bonner Springs — Native American collections, immigrant-community stories of the Shawnee, Delaware, and Wyandot, county history galleries, and a 1905 Kansas City steam fire engine. A polished, genuinely free local museum just west of the city.
