The oldest standing plantation house in Florida (built by enslaved people in the late 18th century) — preserved on Fort George Island as part of the Timucuan Preserve. The visitor experience covers the plantation house, the slave quarters of the 60+ enslaved people who lived and worked here, the kitchen house, barn, waterfront, and an interpretive garden. A free 1-hour audio tour (Lion Teller) is keyed to numbered stops.

Roughly 3 free miles of multi-use trail along both banks of the St. Johns River through downtown Jacksonville. The 1.25-mile Southbank passes Friendship Fountain (1965 landmark) and connects to MOSH, the Acosta Bridge plaza, and Riverplace Tower; the 2-mile Northbank threads alongside the Hyatt Regency, Times-Union Center, and Brooklyn district. Free public art installations dot the route.

A free weekly market every Saturday 10 am – 3 pm under the canopy of the Fuller Warren Bridge in historic Riverside. As many as 175 local artists, food vendors, and farmers gather — pottery, stained-glass art, fresh produce, baked goods, handmade jewelry, and dog treats — plus live music throughout the day. Rain or shine, year-round.

Quirky Landmarks
A 250+ year-old Southern live oak in a small Southbank pocket park — 70 feet tall with a canopy spreading 145 feet across and a trunk 25 feet around. Saved from development in the 1930s by Florida Times-Union editor Pat Robinson's tongue-in-cheek 'treaty' fabrication that the tree was the site of an Indigenous peace treaty. Renamed for philanthropist Jessie Ball duPont.

The closest free public beach to downtown — wide hard-packed sand for walking and biking, a beachfront boardwalk, the Jacksonville Beach Pier for fishing ($4 walk-on), free public pavilions with showers, and a long row of beachfront restaurants and bars on First Street. Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach extend the beach corridor north into walkable downtown sections.

Two adjoining state parks 20 miles east of downtown along the FL-A1A coastal route — Little Talbot has 5+ miles of undeveloped Atlantic beach, 3 miles of bike trails, and a full campground; Big Talbot is the natural preserve with Boneyard Beach (skeletal salt-washed oaks and cedars), Blackrock Beach (tidepools and 'black rocks'), and prime bird-watching. Both managed jointly.

A 120-acre nature preserve and arboretum in northeast Jacksonville with seven walking trails covering 13 distinct ecosystems — pine flatwoods, hardwood hammocks, cypress swamp, ravines, and gardens. Boardwalks across wet areas, benches throughout, and self-guided tree-identification signage. Smaller and more wild than typical botanical gardens; great for casual hikers.

The largest fine arts museum in northeast Florida, set on 2.5 acres of historic gardens along the St. Johns River in Riverside. The collection spans 5,000+ works of European and American art including Meissen porcelain, photography, and Italian Renaissance paintings. The gardens — Olmsted-influenced English, Italian, and Olmsted-inspired sections — are the real differentiator and free with admission.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit big-cat rescue on Jacksonville's north side, home to 30+ rescued exotic animals — tigers, lions, cougars, leopards, bobcats, servals, caracals, bears, coatimundis, and foxes. Most residents came from failed roadside zoos, exotic-pet seizures, or private owners who could no longer care for them. Self-guided day tour with an introductory video; staff is on hand to answer questions.
