First State Heritage Park
Free
History & Culture
First State Heritage Park is an urban state park that weaves together Dover's most historically significant sites — including The Green, Delaware's legislative buildings, the State House, and Old Dover — into a cohesive free experience. The park's visitor center on The Green provides free exhibits on Delaware history from Lenape settlement through the colonial era to statehood, and serves as the launching point for free guided and self-guided tours of the historic district. On December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, and this park tells that story with real depth.
Address: 121 Duke of York St, Dover, DE 19901
Tip: Start at the visitor center to pick up the free self-guided tour map and get oriented before exploring the historic district on foot. The Old State House (1792) is a highlight — one of the best-preserved early American state capitols still standing. Free parking is available along The Green and in nearby municipal lots. The park is steps from Dover's small but charming downtown.

Air Mobility Command Museum
Free
History & Culture
Housed in a restored World War II-era hangar on the edge of Dover Air Force Base, the Air Mobility Command Museum tells the story of American military air transport from the biplane era through the modern jet age. The collection spans more than 30 historic aircraft — from a C-47 Skytrain that flew in the Berlin Airlift to a massive C-5 Galaxy cargo jet — all displayed in and around the historic hangar at no cost to visitors. Open Cockpit Days on the third Saturday of each month (April–October) let you climb inside many of the aircraft and talk with knowledgeable volunteer guides.
Address: 1301 Heritage Rd, Dover AFB, DE 19902
Tip: Access the museum via its dedicated entrance on Route 9 — do not attempt to enter through Dover AFB's main gate. Bring a valid photo ID, which may be requested at the museum entrance. Open Wednesday–Sunday, 9am–4pm. Open Cockpit Days (third Saturday monthly, April–October) are the best time to visit — you can climb into the cockpits of actual Air Force aircraft. Free parking on site.

The Green & Old State House
Free
History & Culture
Dover's historic Green has served as the civic center of Delaware's capital since 1683, making it one of the oldest continuously used public greens in America. At its edge stands the Old State House (1792), a graceful Georgian building that served as Delaware's seat of government for over a century — free to tour with a docent from the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs. The Green itself is a National Historic Landmark and the symbolic heart of the state where Delaware's delegates deliberated before becoming the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution on December 7, 1787.
Address: The Green, Dover, DE 19901
Tip: The Old State House interior is well worth a free docent-led tour — the restored courtroom and legislative chamber give a vivid sense of colonial governance. The Green hosts free community events throughout the year including Dover Days Festival each May. Combine with a walk through the surrounding First State Heritage Park historic district for a full morning of free Delaware history.

Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge
$3.50 per vehicle (drive-in) / $1.50 walk or bike-in / $11 annual refuge pass / free under 16
Parks & Nature
One of the most important migratory bird stopover points on the entire Atlantic Flyway, Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge protects 16,000 acres of tidal salt marsh, freshwater pools, and upland forest just east of Dover on Delaware Bay. The refuge's 12-mile wildlife drive passes four observation towers overlooking impoundments that host staggering concentrations of ducks, geese, shorebirds, and wading birds — with peak fall migration bringing tens of thousands of snow geese at a time. Great blue herons nest in a rookery visible from the road, bald eagles are regularly spotted, and spring shorebird migrations are among the most spectacular on the East Coast.
Address: 2591 Whitehall Neck Rd, Smyrna, DE 19977
Tip: Peak fall migration (October–November) and spring shorebird migration (May) are the best times to visit — snow goose concentrations can exceed 50,000 birds. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if possible; the observation towers give excellent views. The visitor center (open weekdays) has wildlife checklists and seasonal sighting reports. A National Park Pass covers the entrance fee — excellent value if you visit multiple refuges.
