History & Culture

The Southwest's most infamous frontier lockup held 3,000 prisoners between 1876 and 1909. Today you walk the original cell blocks, the dark cell, the guard tower, and a museum of inmate mug shots and escape stories, high on a bluff over the Colorado River.

For 20 years the U.S. Army's Yuma Quartermaster Depot supplied every fort in the Southwest from this riverfront yard. Five of Arizona's oldest buildings survive on the 10-acre site, with restored offices, a corral house, and hands-on river-and-rail history exhibits.

Once a trash-strewn riverbank, these 400 restored acres of marsh, cottonwood, and willow are now a birding hotspot on the Colorado River — home to the endangered Ridgway's Rail and yellow-billed cuckoo. Flat, shaded trails link back to downtown's riverfront parks.

At the foot of Madison Avenue downtown, Gateway Park has the only sandy river beach in Yuma — a popular free swimming spot shaded by the Ocean-to-Ocean bridge, with picnic ramadas, restrooms, and an outdoor rinse-off shower.

A free riverfront plaza on the spot where the first train rolled into Arizona in 1877, centered on a restored 1907 Baldwin steam locomotive. Interpretive panels tell the story of the Yuma Crossing, the rope ferry, and the rail bridges, with a cascading water feature.

A working Medjool date farm on the Yuma Mesa with a farm store famous for thick date shakes. Stop in for fresh dates and goodies, or arrange a farm tour of the palm groves by calling ahead.

Just north of Yuma, this 25,000-acre refuge protects 30 miles of the lower Colorado River and its backwaters. Hike the Painted Desert Trail, scan the observation tower for waterfowl and bighorn sheep, and paddle the river in the cooler months.
